Text: Bertolt Brecht.
"Kriegsfibel" (Guide to War) is a collection of brief captions written by Brecht in 1944 for a book of photographs clipped from wartime newspapers. Both the texts and Eisler's settings reveal the traits shared by the poet and the composer (and one of the reasons Brecht found in Eisler his most congenial collaborator): directness of expression and economy of means. In 1956 Eisler used this music ("See Our Sons") as the last movement of the otherwise twelve-tone "Deutsche Symphonie."
